Taming Hyperlinks: 5 Hidden Excel Practices To Try
Hyperlinks are a convenient practice to use when you want to link and navigate to external online sources quickly while doing everyday tasks or conducting a report. However, if there are actually 5 hidden excel practices that can help you go beyond the basic use of hyperlinks. Do you know any of these practices?
- To document
One of the easiest and best excel practices is to save space by hyperlinking your documents to your spreadsheets. Select the desired cell, image or chart element and then locate your Insert tab. Find the Links group option and choose Hyperlink. This will enable you to choose where you want to link to, but instead, choose Create new document. You can then be able to select the location of your file and authorise by selecting OK. You will also be prompted when to edit, choose edit the new document later. Under the text to display section, simply type whatever text you wish the hyperlink represents.
- To Existing folder / Webpage
Repeat the steps as mentioned above right up to the Link to section. When prompted for the link location, choose Existing File or Webpage instead.You can then either select your file and choose the current folder and then choose the file to link to, or choose a web page. Locate Browsed pages and choose the web page you want the link to. Type the web page into the address box section, rename the text you want displayed and choose OK.
- To an email
Once again, repeat the steps above until the Link to section. Choose Email address for the link to section and type in your desired email under the email address section. Locate the subject section and type in the subject for your email message, you can then proceed to text to display and type in the text you want to be used to represent your hyperlink.
- External reference link creation
You can choose to insert external references instead from workbook to workbooks that are on the internet. Choose where you want the link to go on your spreadsheet cell. Look for your Home tab and look under the clipboard section. Choose copy. Next, look for the worksheet you want the information placed in and select the relevant cell. Click the home tab in that worksheet, under clipboard, choose Paste special and paste the link. Excel will automatically create external reference links for the cell.
- Deleting Hyperlinks
Deleting hyperlinks in excel spreadsheets can be done by either deleting the represented text altogether or right clicking on the cell and selecting clear contents for text. If it’s for images, then hold down the CTRL button, click on the image and choose delete. If it’s for multiple hyperlinks however, you have to select the entire cell range, right click on a cell in the range and choose remove hyperlinks.
