How to: Create buttons and icon boxes in powerpoint

When creating Powerpoint slides for business presentations, it’s ill advised to place large chunks of text. You want to balance out both information and visual engagement in order to score yourself the best chances of engaging your colleagues or potential investors. There are a variety of methods one can employ to find that exact balance- one of these interesting methods would be to create buttons and icon boxes in your powerpoint slides. Here’s what you can do:

A good recommendation would be to begin designing your buttons and icon boxes on blank slides first and save your powerpoint slides so you have a backup copy. Once you have done so, you can begin by creating a basic shape, which is going to be your icon box. Look under the Insert section and choose the shape option you want. For icon boxes and buttons, the general rectangle would do well. Scale to fit to your desire size and duplicate it if you want to create more buttons that are the same size. Now that you are satisfied with the alignment and size of your icon box, choose your shape and select the format shape option.

You will then be given a series of options to choose from, choose NO FILL if you want to create icon boxes and choose the colour for your outline in the line section. This is going to be the icon box- name it accordingly. Next, create a button shape by inserting a circle shape and holding down your shift key so that the circle and sizing can be scaled perfectly. Choose a colour for your circle shape and choose no outline. It’s always important to build the structure of your icon boxes and button sets so continue on by creating a small rectangle at the end of your icon box. This will be where the title of your buttons are going to be included.

Using the text box feature in Microsoft Powerpoint, select the small rectangle so that you will be able to type in the title of your button set. Make sure to set your font colour and rename this rectangle accordingly. If you are creating navigation buttons or play buttons, you can make it known universally by choosing to include small arrows in your button. Simply do this by inserting a triangle shape into your powerpoint slides, resize and align it. If you want different logo designs as the button symbol, import your logos in PNG file format to use it since this allows you more design control in Powerpoint.

To give your buttons dimension, you can also make use of the shadow effect in your Powerpoint slides. Under the format tab, choose Shape Effects and select Inner Shadow. You can add on reflection as an optional setting too. And that should do it! You can now format your buttons to your powerpoint slides!
